Stop your Whining!
Ok...Today i talked to someone from my past and he asked me what i was up to. I answered, "I am working at a college and that I was making work." He said, "You have a job, why are you making work?" I thought to myself that my job is not my life. I make work because that is my life, my therapy, my process. I obviously am not making money off of my photography, (although i wish i could make a living from it!) but i make my artwork anyway. I don't compromise my beliefs, my work, or what i put out for anyone. I could probably crap out a bunch of photo stuff and collage stuff that would sell to people but thats just not me...I am torn between wanting to make a living and continue to make my Art my way! I am a bad self promoter, I am not always the most sociable person off the bat, and I don't always want to play ball. So here i sit in limbo wanting to have my cake and eat it too...

Identity
An abundance of my work is based on the ideas of identity, role reversal, and "the self portrait", and the exploration of the self. I noticed as i scanned in this roll of film I had grease on my finger and quickly cleaned my negative. I then thought isn't this exactly what an artist does, adds his/her "thumbprint" to their particular medium...

Keeps It Movin'
It's humorous sometimes when you decide to do something and you are not sure why. I cannot explain it to people, family, friends,or even people who are informed about my artwork why I am doing my Dancin' Machine project. " What the hell are you doin that for?" That is the usual reaction. There are times when you just need to flesh things out and see how it plays out. When the dust settles and all is said and done I hope that there is some resolve in the work. For now though, I find it equal parts ridiculous and therapeutic. That is about all I can ask for in my artwork!

Process
The way an artist works is his/her process:
proc·ess·es: 1. A series of actions, changes, or functions bringing about a result. Go to tryharderblogspot, look at ARt in America, examine what is going on in MFA programs and so much of what is produced is heavily based on theory: Benjamin, Baudelaire, etc. which is fine with me. I read and examined that stuff while in school too, but what gives? The work still needs to be good...I feel that a lot of artists especially early on, use theory as a crutch. "So... I have this super heady Art theory from the late 1890's, throw in some art speak jargon and then paste up some cut up strips of foam, mannequin parts, and a looped sound piece." That to me is not Art. There still needs to be the skill of the Artist involved. Painters, photographers, graphic designers, filmmakers, remember: "You can't polish a turd."

New summer endeavors/A summer time rant
SO been busy with work work work. Also working Photobooth this summer. Interesting to say the least. Here is the Bob Flowers/Chuck D set up. Back room, no room and drunk kids... No one is free of scrutiny, no one...More photos coming soon... Summer time is a time for love, sun and reflection. A lot is lost in the summer, and the realization that everything you've been struggling to finish and not get drowned by is all forgotten. What the hell did i work so hard for...I forget. A wind named amnesia will come and sweep over all of us. A whirlwind of beer, the smell of searing flesh on a hot weber bbq, and the faint scent of lust will be heavy in the air and in our hearts. Enjoy this time of adolescence because as we get older a little bit of that youth dies and gets buried in the falsely advertised billboard that is Adulthood...

Self Portraits March 2010

new photos
here are some new photos i shot. Some b/w some are e-6 cross processed. I have been shooting self portraits for 6 years or so. It is where my artwork has gravitated. Most of these are shot in my house or garage (studio space) some are shot at my workplaces. I find the environmental portrait works best for what i want the image to convey. I dont have to set up a scene or create a tableau, i can show myself in my space.

Im Back Baby!
So here we go with the excuses...It has been several months since a post. Grad school apps are sent out. I still haven't worked with my sewing machine, and my etsy is stagnant. But i am full bore with my photography and hope to pick up the pace with the other stuff soon! I am hoping to post new pics at least once a week and keep this blog fresh and current
